Leader of the Pack

Just as your dog is a member of your family, you are a member of his pack. All communal structures such as families, schools, churches, communities, and dog packs require leadership to ensure safety, continuity, and direction.

Pack leaders, just like parents, teachers, presidents, and church leaders provide for the needs of their members. You, as the pack leader, must be counted on for structure, nourishment, guidance, comfort, attention, play, and discipline. You must be trusted and respected to ensure safety and security.

Always Be Consistent!!!

There are no exceptions. This relates to actions and words. It applies to all training, feeding, playing, praise, and rules.

Never Give A Command That Can NOT Be Enforced!

Only give a command or attempt to enforce a rule when you can control you dog's actions.
Again...consistency!

Stay Calm and In Control!

Do not train or interact with your pet if you are upset, angry or distracted. Loss of control equals loss of respect.

Use Your Voice and Body Posture Effectively!

If you are giving a command or reprimand use your voice effectively. Lower your voice, be calm and matter-of-fact. Tell don't ask. Give direction, stop that, do this, etc. If your dog is not taking you seriously, stand up taller than your dog, look down on him as you give your command.

You Make the Rules!

Control games, teach commands and reinforce good manners. The rules are black and white. (Stay!) No going for the toy until the "get it" command is given. (Leave it!) No leaping for the toy when it is in it's owners hand. (Off!) No jumping up. (Quit!) No barking . (Off-Sit!) Control leaping or lunging.

The reward for following the rules is getting to play, attention or appropriate praise.
