Basic Obedience Classes

Goal: To achieve a balanced and well trained dog that responds to basic commands while on lead.

Required items: 6 foot Lead, check chain collar and 20 foot training lead (opt)

This 8 week class will address the four basic commands (Sit, Stay, Down and Come) that will establish the ground work that is needed in your future training. All training will be done while the dog is on lead. We recommend that each handler use a 6 foot lead with a check chain training collar. All family members are encouraged to participate in the training.

We will cover a lot of areas of common concern for anyone who owns a dog. Some areas that will be covered are:

• Basic leash handling
• Proper way to put on a check chain
• Four basic commands (sit, stay, down, and come)
• How to deal with normal behavioral problems
• How to maintain basic K-9 health
• Toe nail trimming, grooming coat, teeth and ear care
• What is required from your dog in order to pass the Canine Good Citizenship Test

No dog is too old or to young to start training and learn new games. Most important thing to remember is that both the dog and handler have fun and enjoy the time together while they are training. Everyone is expected to put in 15 to 20 minutes a day of training on the homework that will be assigned after each class. There will also be hand outs after each class to help re-enforce what was covered in class.

Each handler is to maintain control of his/her dog at all times. Desert Dogs Unleashed (DDU) will not tolerate any type of aggression with other dogs or people. If you believe there is a problem or a potential one, we can address this prior to the beginning of class. The handler is also expected to clean up any messes that might happen; cleaning supplies will be furnished by DDU.

In order to pass this class you will need to attend 7 of the 8 classes. Should you miss a class there are various ways to make it up, just let us know and we will be happy to make arrangements.
